Wheelock is a distinguished family name, rooted in Cheshire, England. The name is derived from the Welsh chwyl‑og, meaning “winding river”, after the River Wheelock and the village of Wheelock in Cheshire.
Roger Mainwaring, a member of the influential Mainwaring family, released all his claims to the manor of “Whelock” to Hugh de Whelock during the reign of King Henry II.
The surname traveled to Massachusetts in the 1637 with Rev. Ralph Wheelock and his wife and children. Andrew is a descendant of his son Gershom.
Due to Rev. Ralph’s significance in early America as the founder of two towns (Dedham and Medfield) and the first public school in America (where he was the first public school teacher in America), as well as raising funds for the first college: Harvard, several books and sites detail the surname. See wheelockgenealogy.com.
Ralph’s great-great-grandson Eleazar Wheelock founded Dartmouth College in 1769.
